ABOUT INTENSIVE HOME-BASED TREATMENT (IHBT)

In 1999, the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) and University of Akron’s Center for Family Studies brought together state, university, and community experts to design a program specifically for youth with co-occuring disorders and their families that focused on the partnership between youth and their families. This partnership is a key component for Intensive Home-Based Treatment (IHBT) because we meet youth where they are mentally, physically, and emotionally to provide comprehensive support and intervention services to help them achieve a life of stability and sobriety.

In addition to family support and advocacy, Intensive Home-Based Treatment (IHBT) identifies the following components as critical to programmatic success:
• Cultural mindfulness
• Integrated treatment approach
• Home-based intervention service delivery mechanism
• Developmentally appropriate
• Components that are grounded in prior empirical research
• Theoretically and conceptually driven

Currently, Intensive Home-Based Treatment (IHBT) is being offered by Case Western Reserve University’ Center for Innovative Practices in Akron, Ohio; Cuyahoga County, Ohio; Kalamazoo, Michigan, and McHenry County, Illinois.

Up to 45% of adolescents and young adults
with a mental health disorder have a co-occuring
substance use disorder, and 65% or more
youth with a substance use disorder
also have a mental health disorder.

HOW IS THIS PROGRAM DIFFERENT?

Intensive Home-Based Treatment (IHBT) identifies key issues that may put your child at risk and focuses on their mental health and substance misuse while fostering positive developmental skills and supportive, healthy family strategies that are available to our youth and their families 24/7.

The Intensive Home-Based Treatment (IHBT) program depends on a strong support system surrounding youth as they navigate through their journey to mental health management and sobriety. As such, it is required that the youth and at least one full-time caregiver actively participates in the treatment process.
